A highlight of the visit was the Mildmay laboratory, where state-of-the-art medical equipment underscored the hospital\u2019s commitment to high-level healthcare delivery and research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Conversations on Partnership<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The visit transitioned into a formal meeting focused on strengthening ties between Mildmay Uganda and Pathogen Economy Labs. The Executive Director of Mildmay and the Director of Research shared keynote remarks, highlighting the value of collaboration and expressing gratitude for the growing partnership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mildmay also used the opportunity to showcase innovations emerging from the ASPIRE Project, the hospital\u2019s innovation hub, as well as strategies being advanced through the Medical Research Capacity Unit (MRCU). Their ongoing work in research capacity building opened avenues for rich conversations on joint initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pathogen Economy Labs Presentations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On PEL\u2019s side, Mark, the Project Manager, presented an overview of the Lab\u2019s work. He highlighted PEL\u2019s focus areas, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Digitization of workflows for efficiency in healthcare systems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An upcoming AI in Health Startups Bootcamp, designed to support innovators in the sector.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The history of PEL was also shared: a multi-disciplinary team of researchers, data scientists, and engineers with experience in projects funded by institutions such as MAK-RF, and collaborations spanning government, academia, and the private sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PEL emphasized the value it provides to the health sector, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>AI-driven disease diagnosis and management.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Telemedicine and remote patient monitoring solutions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Saving Uganda up to UGX 20 billion annually, representing a 28.6% reduction in healthcare costs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Product Demonstrations: TB &amp; Cancer Screening Tools<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The session also featured live demonstrations of PEL\u2019s cutting-edge innovations. Peter presented the TB Screening Tool, developed using a dataset collected over three years with confirmed TB cases. Mildmay\u2019s team raised important questions about accuracy and data validation, while also offering constructive suggestions for improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, Chodrine Mutebi introduced the Cancer Screening Tool Model, which sparked interest from Mildmay\u2019s experts. Their feedback centered on the need for more rigorous quality assurance and optimizing the app to reduce storage requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Alignment with Mildmay\u2019s Needs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Discussions revealed strong relevance between PEL\u2019s work and Mildmay\u2019s mission. Potential collaborations include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Applying Natural Language Processing (NLP) for patient data summarization.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exploring AI for cancer diagnosis, treatment planning, and optimization.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Integrating PEL\u2019s tools within Mildmay\u2019s innovation framework to enhance patient care.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Key Outcomes &amp; Next Steps<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The visit concluded with a set of action points:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Signing an MOU to formalize Mildmay\u2019s provision of clinical expertise to PEL.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exploring collaboration within Mildmay\u2019s Innovation Hub and framework.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evaluating the immediate value Mildmay can derive from PEL\u2019s two showcased innovations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both parties agreed on the importance of regular follow-up meetings to refine ideas and accelerate collaborative efforts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A Shared Vision for the Future<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The field day at Mildmay was more than a hospital visit\u2014it was a bridge-building exercise between two organizations committed to leveraging innovation for better healthcare outcomes.
